Fox Island Bridge Replacement Timeline: What Homeowners Need to Know About the Next Steps Through 2031
The Fox Island Bridge replacement project continues moving forward, and one of the biggest questions I hear from Fox Island residents, Gig Harbor homeowners, and prospective buyers is:  “What is the actual timeline?”

Pierce County Planning & Public Works recently shared an updated projected timeline outlining the next major phases of the Fox Island Bridge replacement process. While many conversations online have created confusion and speculation, the graphic below helps break down what is actually scheduled over the coming years.

For homeowners, buyers, and residents, understanding the timeline matters because this is not an overnight project. This is a long-term infrastructure process involving environmental studies, permitting, design work, funding pursuits, property evaluations, and eventual construction planning.

And importantly: construction is currently projected for 2031, not tomorrow.

Fox Island Bridge Timeline Overview
2025: TS&L Finalized The project reached completion of the Type, Size & Location (TS&L) phase.

This phase helps determine:

Proposed bridge concepts
Preliminary structure planning
Placement considerations
Engineering feasibility
Long-range transportation planning
This is essentially the foundational planning stage that helps define what future options may look like.

2026: Environmental Analysis & Permitting Begin
Beginning in 2026, the project enters one of the most important phases:

Environmental review and permitting. This process typically involves:

Environmental impact studies
Shoreline considerations
Habitat and marine analysis
Traffic studies
State and federal permitting
Community input opportunities
Large public infrastructure projects in Washington State often spend years in environmental review before construction can begin.

2028: Design Phase Begins
Current projections indicate formal bridge design work would begin around 2028. This phase may include:

Engineering refinement
Structural planning
Traffic flow analysis
Construction sequencing
Utility coordination
Public infrastructure integration
At this point, residents will likely begin seeing more detailed visuals and technical planning documents emerge.

2029: Property Appraisals, Acquisitions & Relocations
One of the most talked-about portions of the timeline is expected to begin around 2029: Property appraisals, acquisitions, and relocations.
Naturally, this phase has generated questions among nearby property owners.

It’s important to note:

Not all surrounding properties are necessarily impacted
Exact acquisition needs are still subject to ongoing design and engineering
Final plans remain dependent on environmental approvals and funding
Pierce County has stated that project details may continue evolving as planning progresses.

2031: Estimated Construction Start

Current projections estimate construction beginning around 2031, dependent upon:

Permitting approvals
Funding availability
Property acquisitions
Final engineering approvals
One of the key details many residents may overlook is the statement included directly in the timeline:

“Grant funding is continuously being pursued.”
This means funding efforts remain active and ongoing throughout the life of the project.

Why This Timeline Matters for Fox Island Homeowners

For many Fox Island residents, this project creates understandable questions surrounding:

Property values
Traffic impacts
Accessibility
Long-term planning
Future marketability
Waterfront lifestyle preservation

As a local Gig Harbor and Fox Island Realtor®, I can tell you this: Buyers are still actively searching for Fox Island homes!
Waterfront properties, view homes, acreage estates, and luxury homes on Fox Island continue attracting strong interest because of the island’s unique lifestyle, privacy, boating access, and proximity to Gig Harbor and Tacoma.

Infrastructure discussions can create emotional reactions online, but the actual timeline shows this remains a long-range project still moving through multiple phases before construction begins.

Avoid the Rumors. Follow the Facts. One Facebook post can quickly become “fact” in a small community.

That’s exactly why I’ve partnered with Pierce County Planning & Public Works and attended direct community meetings with county engineers and leadership — so residents can receive information sourced directly from the people working on the project.

My goal is to help Fox Island residents stay informed with:

  • Verified project updates
  • Timeline changes
  • Community meetings
  • Real estate impacts
  • Public hearing notices
  • Infrastructure developments
  • Property market insights
